Tips for colleagues

Smoking is an addiction. Smokers need support from all of us. Be aware quitting is a personal and private decision. If a colleague who smokes and is trying to quit asks for support, here’s a few ideas how you can help.
  • Support them. Offer to go for a walk or take a break or what else they might need.
  • Cut them some slack. Quitting smoking is a difficult thing to do. Allow your colleagues not to be on the top of their game for a while.
  • Acknowledge milestones. Present someone who has quit or achieved a milestone in smoke-free days with a card.
  • Respect their wishes. If they want to be left alone, do so. If they want your encouragement and support, be there.
  • Take the cue from the quitter. Don’t assume that you know the right thing to do. Don’t assume that every smoker is ready/willing to quit.

Remember to respect the wishes of smokers choosing not to quit or who are not ready to quit.
